Julius Caesar - Davenport Theater - The Culture News

(New York, NY) - The Wheelhouse Theater Company, a new theater company dedicated to transformative, joyful, and essential works, has announced that it will present a dynamic, bloody production of William Shakespeare’s JULIUS CAESAR, Wednesday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 12th at the Davenport Theatre, 354 West 45th Street. The Founding Artistic Director of the Company Jeff Wise will direct.

OUR REVIEW: This play, so rarely staged because of the demand of a large cast, is well staged and adapted at the Davenport Theater by Mr. Jeff Wose. Mr Brendan Titley is the stage taker with his well-projected and theatrical voice. The staging is quite innovative and all the actors deserve kudos for playing all the different roles.

JULIUS CAESAR is William Shakespeare’s account of the most famous assassination in the ancient world. This pared-down production uses six actors and transformative design to distill the timeless themes of envy and idealism, reason and ambition, with ominous political overtones that serve as a warning shot across the bow of our current political climate.

“There’s an immediate reaction to some of the themes that emerge from this play, such as ‘violence begets violence’, the differences in public and private persona in the political spectrum, power in politics as well as the unintended consequences resulting from hubris,” says Mr. Wise. “And of course, one cannot think of the Roman Empire without also thinking of its ultimate and iconic demise, which is starting to look a lot like our country right now.”

The cast of JULIUS CAESAR features Matt Harrington (Richard III/Twelfth Night with Mark Rylance, Matilda), David Kenner, Chris Myers (OBIE for “An Octaroon”), Brendan Titley, Ben Mehl, and Shayna Small.

Scenic Design is by Brittany Vasta, Lighting Design is by Drew Florida, Sound Design is by Matt Bittner and Costume Design is by Lilah Fisher.

Jeff Wise is the founder of The Wheelhouse Theater Company. His directorial credits include Julius Caesar (Davenport Theater), BACK (Schubert Theater, NYU), Hamlet (Gene Frankel Theater), and Henry IV Part II (Access Theater). Acting Credits: Regional-Joseph, Lend Me a Tenor, The Pajama Game. NYC: Henry IV Part II, Midsummer Night's Dream, Six Degrees of Separation, The Three Sisters, Bus Stop, La Ronde, MFA: NYU.

Performances of The Wheelhouse Theatre Company’s production of JULIUS CAESAR are on March 2-5 at 7:30 p.m., March 6 at 3:30 p.m., March 9-12 at 7:30 p.m. and March 13 at 3:30 p.m.

ABOUT THE WHEELHOUSE THEATRE COMPANY

The Wheelhouse is several years in the making. It started with a group of close friends coming out of NYU's Graduate Acting Program wanting to continue to foster the playful ensemble work they so cherished in their training. As each of us has been carried from job to job, The Wheelhouse has served as an artistic home base, a reservoir where we can artistically rehydrate. But really, all we want is to get in a room together and continue acting like jackasses, because let’s face it, if we aren't having fun, how can we possibly expect you to?!
