Art New York, presented by Art Miami, returns to Pier 94 with the addition of CONTEXT To Kick Off New York Art Week

Premier International Contemporary and Modern Fairs to Showcase More Than 150 Galleries and 1,200 Artists from Over 50 Countries May 3-8

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Art Miami, the preeminent producer of leading international contemporary and modern art fairs, has announced the return of Art New York for its second year and the debut of CONTEXT New York this spring. The two highly-anticipated events will showcase artwork from more than 150 galleries representing nearly 1,200 artists from 50 countries. The sister art fairs will take place May 3 - 8 at Pier 94, effectively launching New York Art Week, the pinnacle of New York’s art and cultural season.

Art New York 2016 provides a fresh alternative to acquiring important, never-before-exhibited works from both primary and secondary markets. The fair welcomes both experienced and new art collectors who are looking to experience a carefully curated, rich-in-content presentation of the best in the global contemporary art market. The inaugural edition of Art Miami New York in 2015 attracted more than 19,500 visitors, including over 5,000 art world luminaries and journalists during the VIP Preview event.

“After the tremendously positive response we received last year, we have created an experience wholly dedicated to the thriving art market in New York,” said Katelijne De Backer, director of Art New York. “The first edition of Art New York last year provided a great opportunity for collectors, curators and art advisors residing in or visiting Manhattan with the opportunity to acquire the finest works available to the market from both the 20th and 21st centuries. This year, we also welcome our sister fair CONTEXT to join Art New York, which will increase the selection of works available for acquisition by emergent and mid-career cutting-edge talent during the most important week for the arts in New York City.”

Art Miami also presents the inaugural CONTEXT New York fair, dedicated to the development and reinforcement of emerging and mid-career artists, at Pier 94 this year. Located alongside Art New York, the open atmosphere at CONTEXT New York is designed to generate meaningful dialogue between artists, galleries, and collectors while providing the ultimate platform to show cutting-edge talent from leading galleries around the world.

“The introduction of CONTEXT New York will be monumental in New York’s burgeoning art scene,” said CONTEXT director Julian Navarro. “From start to finish, each element has been carefully selected to feature a series of solo artist projects, curated spaces, special conversations, and events. We look forward to welcoming all visitors – from the seasoned collector acquiring new works to the budding art enthusiast seeking to start a collection.”

Art New York and CONTEXT New York, adjacent to each other at Pier 94, begin with an elegant, invitation-only VIP Preview event on Tuesday, May 3 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. The special preview offers collectors, art advisors, curators, and media the opportunity to examine and acquire the finest works available in the market before the fairs open to the public that evening and continue through Sunday, May 8. The combined exhibition space of Art New York and CONTEXT New York will cover more than 200,000 square feet, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Hudson River. Ticket sales will go live online starting Friday, March 25, 2016; one-day passes will be available for $40, multi-day passes for $75 and Senior/Students for $25.

In conjunction with Frieze New York, one of the city’s other major art events during New York Art Week, Art New York and CONTEXT New York will provide Frieze VIP cardholders complimentary admittance and courtesy shuttle service to Pier 94 from the Frieze Ferry Terminal (located on 35th Street), as well as from select auction houses and the Chelsea arts district.
