Who is ROSE HARTMAN?
Over the last four decades, Hartman has photographed fashion icons and celebrities in some of the most legendary New York nightlife spots, from Studio 54 to the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala.
Rose is known for her portraits of celebrities. Her photo of Bianca Jagger mounted on a white horse at the Studio 54 discotheque on her 30th birthday is certainly the most representative of her work.
Lloyd Grove cites it, in The Daily Beast in 2016, as "the emblematic image of a lost age." Another well-known photograph presents Jerry Hall in conversation with Andy Warhol.
Her photographic work has been published in newspapers and magazines including Allure, Art + Auction, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Panorama, The New York Times, New York, Stern, London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Vogue (France, Netherlands and Italy), New York Magazine, Marie Claire, Allure, BBC.com, Grazia, The Journal of Photography, Colette, The Daily Beast, W Magazine, Rolling Stone...
Capturing the ephemeral image of celebrities, jet-setters, actors, singers, and other artists, Rose Hartman was the first to be invited by designers behind the curtains of Fashion Week parades to shoot models and designers behind the scenes, as shown in his first book "Birds of Paradise: An Intimate View of New York Fashion World".
In 2011-12, a retrospective of her work with more than 60 photographs was held at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. Her archival images have also been exhibited at the Ravestijn Gallery in Amsterdam (2012) and in Punta del Este, Uruguay (2013), as well as in American museums, including the Experience Music Project, the Whitney Museum, and the New York City Museum.
In 2016, a feature documentary, The Incomparable Rose Hartman, was created about her life and work. The documentary won the special mention award at the DOC NYC 2016 Film Festival. Trailer: https://youtu.be/KLfgsoauiEQ
